Introduction: Water damage can cause significant issues, especially when it goes unnoticed for an extended period. In this project by Kahakai Construction Maui General Construction, a slow leak behind the bar cabinet led to microbial growth and damage to both the cabinet and surrounding drywall. In this post, we’ll walk you through the process of water damage mitigation and reconstruction that we completed to restore the area to its original state.
Before the Restoration: The initial condition of the bar area showed considerable damage due to the slow leak. Roots and microbial growth had weakened the bar cabinet, and the drywall had also suffered. Here’s what we were working with:
Damage Assessment: Upon identifying the source of the issue—a slow leak behind the bar cabinet—it was clear that both the bar cabinet and drywall required substantial repair. We conducted a detailed inspection to fully assess the damage before proceeding with the mitigation and reconstruction process.
Mitigation Steps: We started by removing the damaged elements:
First, we removed the countertop and the damaged sink cabinet.
The affected drywall was cut out to prevent further spread of microbial growth.
We set up fans and dehumidifiers to begin drying the area, closely monitoring the drying process to ensure it was completely dry before we started the repairs.
Reconstruction Process: Once the area was fully dried, we began the restoration:
New drywall was installed to restore the wall’s structural integrity.
The bar cabinet was restored, and we built a new box for the face frame and doors to replace the damaged sections.
After the restoration was complete, we carefully reinstalled the countertop and gave the area a fresh coat of paint, returning the bar to its original condition.
After the Restoration: The result was a beautifully restored bar area, free from any visible signs of water damage. The new drywall and restored cabinet fit seamlessly into the space, returning it to its former elegance. With the area fully repaired and freshly painted, it looked as good as new.
Conclusion: Water damage doesn’t have to be the end of a beautiful space. With prompt mitigation and professional reconstruction, Kahakai Construction was able to restore the bar area to its original beauty.
